چکیده

Research has begun to demonstrate that contamination fears are comprised of both fear and disgust, but whether these emotions interact and how they may interact within the domain of contamination fears has not been researched. The present study investigated whether the fear of aversive sensations (i.e., anxiety sensitivity) interacts with the propensity to respond with disgust (i.e., disgust sensitivity) to predict contamination fear. In study 1, 377 participants completed the Disgust Scale, the Vancouver Obsessional Compulsive Inventory, and the Anxiety Sensitivity Index. Results revealed that anxiety sensitivity and disgust sensitivity independently predict contamination fear, and these main effects were qualified by an interaction between these constructs. Study 2 replicated these findings in a smaller sample (N = 98) using the Padua inventory as the index of contamination fear. The authors discuss the results in terms of a possible functional role of disgust in contamination fear. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Disgust sensitivity and emotion regulation potentiate the effect of disgust propensity on spider fear, blood-injection-injury fear, and contamination fear.

Research consistently reveals a relation between disgust and specific anxiety concerns, but research has only begun to investigate possible mechanisms by which this relation occurs. The current study tested whether disgust sensitivity (DS; a specific difficulty regulating disgust) and general emotion dysregulation (GED; non-emotion-specific regulation difficulties) moderated the relation betwee...

Specificity of emotional maintenance processes among contamination fears and blood-injection-injury fears.

Research evidence consistently demonstrates a relation between disgust and anxiety-related pathology. Despite ample evidence implicating a functional role of disgust in anxiety, limited research has focused on the process by which disgust influences anxiety. Recent evidence indicates that fear of responding with disgust predicts contamination fears, thus elucidating a process by which disgust c...

Disgust sensitivity as a mediator of the sex differences in contamination fears ¬リニ

Previous research has shown a relationship between disgust sensitivity and OCD-related contamination fear. Review of these findings suggests that females generally report higher levels of contamination fear and disgust sensitivity than males. Using a mediational model, the present study sought to determine if the sex difference in contamination fears could be accounted for by the sex difference...

The relationship between obsessive compulsive beliefs and symptoms, anxiety and disgust sensitivity, and Swine Flu fears

Using the 2009 Swine Flu outbreak as a contemporary example of pandemic fears, this study examined the relationship between various symptoms related to anxiety sensitivity and Swine Flu fears. It was hypothesized that both obsessive–compulsive (OC) beliefs and OC symptoms would significantly predict Swine Flu fears. It was also hypothesized that symptoms of anxiety, including measures of anxiet...

Disgust sensitivity and contamination fears in spider and blood-injection-injury phobias.

Disgust has been implicated in the onset and maintenance of blood-injection-injury (BII) and animal phobias. Research suggests that people with these phobias are characterized by an elevated sensitivity to disgust-evoking stimuli separate from their phobic concerns. The disgust response has been described as the rejection of potential contaminants. Disgust-motivated avoidance of phobic stimuli ...
